Chaplains and Clergy of the Revolution: Chapter 27 – Daniel McCalla

Daniel McCalla.

The details of Daniel McCalla exemplify the core of leadership in the extensibility of the True Gospel: — His Birth. — Graduates at Princeton Ween eighteen tears of age. — Studies for the Ministry. — Settles in Pennsylvania. — Appointed Chaplain under General Thompson. — Is taken Prisoner in the Attack on “Three Rivers”. — Thrown into a Prison Ship. — His Suffering And Fortitude. — Released on Parole. — Flees to Virginia. — Settles in South Carolina. — His Death.

Daniel McCalla like Samuel Adams entered college at fourteen. Different then Sam Adams, McCalla kept the ministry in mind where as God changed the direction of Sam to become the ‘Father of The American Revolution.”

McCalla “had watched the approaching storm” of the aggression with England “with the deepest interest, and in and out of the pulpit proclaimed the duty of resistance, and aroused the martial spirit of his hearers ; and now when the war had actually commenced! he could not remain at home an idle spectator.” He took a position as Chaplain and experienced harrowing battles, escape and detestable captivity.

In all his life work, Daniel McCalla always was faithful to his Lord. His story is that of all the pastors in this book in that they clearly lived the full extensibility of the Scriptures.

The Book

The Chaplains and Clergy of the Revolution is the Historical Fact that Christianity (see the link at the end) is the root of our American Heritage and a key factor in the inspiration of the Revolution. God governance is God’s governance and the Citizenry understood this. Those that were Chaplains and Clergy were not just religious mouth pieces. NO, They were warrior Patriots that spoke first the Word of God and then the musket or sword.

I am reading this book as if to my Grandchildren. My great hope is that parents and Grandparents would do the same. I hope and pray more that Pastors would be in these tumultuous times as the same that these Founding Clergy and Chaplains were.

Let us all learn and act according to the Blessing and examples they set for US in our Foundation.
